When the Whale Swallows You (Jonah 2:7)

When my life was ebbing away, I remembered you, Lord, and my prayer rose to you, to your holy temple.

— Jonah 2:7 (NIV)

Jonah’s prayer is the second chapter of his story, not the first. Chapter one is the running. Chapter two is the praying.

There’s a reason for that order.

Some of us don’t learn to pray until we’ve been swallowed. Until the lights go out. Until the wave we thought we could outrun catches up, and the storm we thought we could sleep through becomes the storm we’re thrown overboard into.

From inside the belly of the fish, in the dark, with no way out, Jonah said something that will preach to anyone who has ever ended up somewhere they never planned to be: when my life was ebbing away, I remembered you, Lord.

Whales are not always punishments.

Sometimes they’re the only quiet room God can get you into.

If you’re in one right now, don’t waste it.

When was the last time you heard God’s voice clearly — and where were you when it happened?
