Give Me This Mountain (Joshua 14:12)

Now give me this hill country that the Lord promised me that day.

Joshua 14:12 (NIV)

Caleb was eighty-five years old when he walked up to Joshua and asked for a mountain.

Not a retirement plot. Not a comfortable valley. A mountain. And not just any mountain: the one with the giants and the fortified cities. The one nobody else wanted.

“Now give me this hill country that the Lord promised me that day,” he said.

Forty-five years had passed since that promise.

Forty-five years.

He had not forgotten it. He had not downgraded it. He had not quietly shrunk the dream to something more reasonable to make the wait easier to live with. He came back, four and a half decades later, and asked for the same mountain.

Some of us have shrunk the dream down to something safe because the years got long. Caleb didn’t. The promise God made to you when you were younger may still be sitting on the table. He hasn’t moved it. The question is whether you’re still walking toward it.

Point of Reflection

What promise did God make to you that you’ve quietly stopped expecting him to keep?

This verse is on a pair of socks as well: The Calebs, Give Me This Mountain.
