Just Trying… or Actually Becoming?

OK, friends - I’ve been thinking a lot lately about the difference between trying and becoming.

Because if I’m being honest…

Most days, I feel like I’m just trying.

Trying to be more patient.
Trying to be more kind.
Trying to be more like Jesus.

And some days?

It feels like I’m not making much progress at all. 😅

Please tell me I'm not the only one here...

But here’s something that’s been shifting my perspective:

Following Jesus isn’t just about what we do

It’s about who we are becoming.

And that, my friends is a BIG challenge some days, because it’s easy to think of our faith as a checklist:

✔️ Pray
✔️ Read scriptures
✔️ Be nice
✔️ Try harder tomorrow

And don't get me wrong - those things matter.

But they’re not the end goal.

They’re the training ground.

Because the real goal isn’t just to act like Jesus…

It’s to become more like Him.

And here’s the encouraging part:

That kind of change doesn’t happen all at once.

It happens in small, everyday moments:

  • Choosing patience when you’re frustrated with a family member or friend

  • Showing kindness when it’s inconvenient

  • Letting something go instead of holding onto it

  • Trying again after you mess up

It’s not dramatic.

But it’s pretty real.

And over time, those small moments start to shape your heart.

That’s why I love our “Just Tryna Be Like Jesus” socks.

Because they don’t say:

“I’ve arrived.”

They say:

“I’m in the process...I'm TRYING!"

They’re a reminder of the attributes we’re working on:

Faith
Hope
Charity & Love
Virtue
Integrity
Knowledge
Patience
Humility
Diligence
Obedience.

Not perfectly.

But consistently.

So, here’s what I’m learning:

God isn’t expecting instant perfection in us.

He’s inviting steady progress.

It’s less about getting everything right today…and more about who you’re becoming over time.

Because if you keep showing up…
keep trying…
keep turning your heart toward Him…

Something begins to change.

Not just your actions.

But your nature changes.

I may not be where I want to be yet.

But I’m not where I used to be either.

And that’s a HUGE win.

Because trying—when it’s done with intention—eventually turns into becoming.
