Life Lessons from Genesis (and Kindergarten)

The other day I was reminded of that fun little book titled All I Really Need to Know, I Learned in Kindergarten by author and Christian minister Robert Fulghum.

Here are some of the notable ones in his list:

  • Share everything.

  • Play fair.

  • Don’t hit people.

  • Put things back where you found them.

  • Clean up your own mess.

  • Don’t take things that aren’t yours.

  • Say you’re sorry when you hurt somebody.

  • Wash your hands before you eat.

  • Flush. (I can’t overemphasize this one…)

  • Warm cookies and cold milk are good for you. (PREACH!)

  • Live a balanced life—learn some and think some and draw and paint and sing and dance and play and work every day some.

  • Take a nap every afternoon.

  • When you go out in the world, watch out for traffic, hold hands, and stick together.

Simple truths, but pretty great ones.

Well, I’ve been re-studying the book of Genesis for the last couple months and have found so many amazing truths to live by… and yes, some wild and crazy ones too. I decided to compile my own list, just for fun. Here are a few of my favorites:

  • The Great Creator of the universe really does love me and created me in His image! (Genesis 1)

  • Satan is far weaker than I thought, and he can be overcome with God’s help. (Genesis 3)

  • God loves making covenants with His children, and I have access to all those same blessings. (Genesis 8, 12–17)

  • Don’t look back—keep moving forward! (Genesis 18–19)

  • It is ALL about family. (Genesis 12–50)

  • A godly marriage is worth every effort. (Genesis 24)

  • Put God first—it changes everything. (Genesis 32–36)

  • When God is with me, I will always come out on top. (Genesis 37–50). Note: We even have a wildly popular sock inspired by this!  See below.

  • The Lord is always near me and my trials are for my benefit. I am not forgotten. (Genesis 37, 39)

  • Forgiveness heals—especially within family. (Genesis 45–50)

  • Everything will be okay IF I follow God. (All of Genesis)

Just a few takeaways reminding me of God’s love and His goodness. The Old Testament isn’t that hard to understand after all—it’s full of simple, powerful truths, just like kindergarten.

Thanks for walking with us today!
